Galway Arts Festival History

Situated on the west coast of Ireland by the Atlantic Ocean, Galway has long been considered a centre of cultural excellence. The fastest growing city in Europe, Galway is a vibrant university city with its city centre, a labyrinth of winding medieval streets, squares and waterways. With a population of 75,000 Galway sits on the edge of the River Corrib surrounded by Galway Bay facing the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

Galway Arts Festival is the defining cultural expression of Galway and is at the heart of all aspects life in the city. The Festival’s contribution to the economic, social and cultural life of the west of Ireland is immeasurable and while the Festival celebrates Galway in July each year, Galway itself is a city in celebration during the Festival.

Over its 32 year history the Festival has become a vital showcase for Irish arts and international arts and is now firmly established as Ireland’s leading arts festival. The Festival collaborates with artists and companies throughout the world to initiate, commission and produce new work.
Regarded as one of Europe’s key cultural events Galway Arts Festival is an international celebration of the performing and visual arts. Over 150,000 people attend the Festival annually with hundreds of writers, artists, performers and musicians creating theatre, spectacle, street art, music, comedy, literature and music to produce a stunning fortnight of cultural activity and celebration.

The spirit of Galway Arts Festival is all-inclusive, accessible and always open to suggestion. Contemporary festivals fall over themselves to state their commitment to both street and “high art”. The difference in Galway is that ambition is realised.

A pop-up at the big top?
West at The Twelve provides delicious festival food to the Galway
Arts Festival’s Big Top

The Twelve hasn’t been around quite so long as The Galway Arts Festival  but has made a massive
impact in its first 5 years, particularly for lovers of fine, local and seasonal food, with West at The Twelve regularly winning awards for its great
take on the best of the region.
West at The Twelve never stands still – literally – as the talented team has already taken
West east with a hugely successful pop-up restaurant at The Stephen’s Green
Hibernian Club in Dublin during April, and now they are popping up again, with
great festival food at Galway Arts Festival’s Big Top – it’s a big top pop-up!
On July 16, 18, 20, 22 and 23 there are great gigs on in the Galway Big Top, and they are
harmonised with perfectly by the soulful tastes of food from West at The
Twelve.
Food from West at the Big Top lives up to those high standards, with options including Marty’s
Killary Harbour mussels with a choice of sauces – the very rock’n’roll Jack
Daniels cream or the deeply indie apple vodka and Granny Smith! The fresh
tastes of just-picked strawberry and Brie salad with organic leaves and berry
vinaigrette provide a healthier option for festival-going fashionistas keen to
keep their skinny jeans skinny, and for the late night munchies, a tasty Connemara lamb casserole with potatoes and root
vegetables will hit the spot. Deliciously creamy Galway Bay
seafood chowder and James McGeough’s Oughterard lamb sausages on a granary bap
with The Twelve’s onion marmalade are also Big Top options from West at The Twelve.

“We love a spot of adventure at The Twelve,” says Fergus O’ Halloran, the General Manager of
the hotel, “and we get a huge kick out of bringing our great local, seasonal
food out of the restaurant and to new venues and audiences. The whole team also
loves good music, so this is the best of all worlds for us – West at the Big Top is going to be rocking!”
So for a chance to sample tastes from Galway’s top restaurant, pop-up style, and tune into
terrific performances from some great bands, rock up to the pop-up at the Big Top!
