Taking scenic photos is a fantastic way to connect with the beauty of the world around us. It's a chance to slow down, appreciate the details, and capture a moment in time. Whether it's the vibrant colors of a sunset, the towering majesty of mountains, or the intricate patterns of nature, each photograph tells a unique story and offers a personal perspective on the landscape. The process itself can be meditative, forcing you to be present and observe the interplay of light and shadow, color and texture. Plus, sharing these visual stories with others can bring joy and inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Some fantastic ideas below for setting out on your explorations of the Wild atlantic Way!

Get Inspired – The Snap Shots!

Island Escapes, Hidden Beaches & Abbey Serenity

  • Depart early morning for a trip to the Aran Islands, one of Ireland’s true treasures. Drive to Ros a’ Mhíl (Rosaveal) port (about 30 mins away) and catch a morning ferry to Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands.
  • Rent a bike or take a guided tour to explore Dún Aonghasa, the prehistoric cliffside fort, and take in the raw beauty of island life. Don’t forget to pick up a hand-knit Aran sweater or a locally made souvenir.
  • Take a scenic drive south to Dogs Bay and Gurteen Bay near Roundstone, two of Ireland’s most iconic beaches. Sink your toes into the white shell sand, swim in crystal waters, or simply bask in the sun with a picnic.

While in the area, continue the drive inland through the lush valleys of Connemara to visit the magnificent Kylemore Abbey. Walk the grounds, take in the fairy-tale architecture, and don’t forget to visit the gift shop – the nuns here make their own soaps using traditional methods. A little slice of serenity to bring home.

Journey to the Fjord

  • Set off for Killary Fjord, Ireland’s only fjord. Climb aboard a Killary Fjord Boat Tour to glide between Connemara’s towering hills. Expect seals, sea birds, and sheer serenity.
  • Nearby, stop at Killary Sheep Farm, a working farm where you can watch sheepdog demonstrations, turf-cutting, and even bottle-feed lambs in spring.

Wild Landscapes & Historic Splendour

  • Begin the day exploring Connemara National Park, home to bog lands, woodlands, and rare wildlife. For stunning views, hike up Diamond Hill, a moderately challenging walk that rewards you with a panoramic sweep of coastline and mountains.
  • Just a few minutes away is the iconic Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Gardens. Wander the romantic castle, stroll through the restored gardens, and don’t leave without visiting the gift shop, where handmade soaps by the resident Benedictine nuns are a fragrant reminder of your visit.
  • Coral Strand in Carraroe is absolutely out of this world, crystal clear waters and stunning bay views.

From Oysters to Sky High Views

  • Head west to the DK Connemara Oyster Farm near Ballinakill Bay for a fascinating oyster tour. Learn how these prized shellfish are cultivated and sample some fresh from the sea.
  • Then, continue on to Clifden’s famous Sky Road, a spectacular looped drive overlooking the Atlantic, islands, and Connemara hills. Stop at viewing points for breath-taking photos—and to just soak it all in.

Into the Earth and Into the Past

  • Travel eastward to Glengowla Mines and Family Farm, near Oughterard. Explore a 19th-century silver and lead mine underground, then visit the family farm to meet sheep, horses, and working dogs. It’s a fun, educational stop for all ages.

Back to Barna

Barna itself has TONS of photo ops to offer! Silver Strand is ranked #4 beach in Ireland and is only a 2 minute drive from our door. Barna Pier is A 1 Minute walk, passing through the cute Village properties and rocky shore. Barna Woods is also a 2 minute drive and its stone bridges, trickling streams, and ancient trees are a beautiful medium!
