Top 10 Hikes in Barna, Connemara & Galway

1. Diamond Hill – Connemara National Park (Letterfrack)

Distance: 7 km (loop) | Time: 2–3 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
A must-do. The well-maintained gravel path leads to a rocky summit with sweeping views of the Twelve Bens, Kylemore Abbey, and the Atlantic Ocean. Great for all levels with stunning rewards at the top. 

2. Sky Road Loop Walk (Clifden)

Distance: 11 km loop | Time: 2–3 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
Start in Clifden and follow the famous Sky Road for dramatic coastal scenery, stone-walled fields, and views of offshore islands. A favourite for walkers and cyclists alike. 

3. The Derroura Mountain Bike & Walking Trail (near Oughterard)

Distance: 14 km (loop) | Time: 3–4 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
This mixed-use trail weaves through forests and open hills with gorgeous views over Lough Corrib and the Maumturks. A hidden gem for walkers seeking solitude. 

4. Barna Woods & Cappagh Park (Barna)

Distance: 3–5 km (various loops) | Time: 1–2 hours | Difficulty: Easy
Perfect for a shaded woodland stroll, this ancient deciduous forest just outside Barna is full of birdsong, old stone bridges, and peaceful walking paths. 

5. The Western Way (Oughterard to Leenane Section)

Distance: ~30 km (can be broken up) | Time: Full day or more | Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging
Part of Ireland’s long-distance walking network, this stretch takes in lakes, valleys, and quiet backroads, all with Connemara’s wild charm. Great for a serious day out or an overnight hike. 

6. Mweelrea Mountain (Connemara/Mayo border)

Distance: 10 km (loop or out-and-back) | Time: 4–6 hours | Difficulty: Challenging
The highest mountain in Connacht. This is a serious hike for experienced walkers, offering some of the most awe-inspiring views in Ireland — from Killary Fjord to the Atlantic and beyond. 

7. Twelve Bens Loop (starting from Gleninagh or Inagh Valley)

Distance: Variable (10–20+ km) | Time: 4–8 hours | Difficulty: Very Challenging
These rugged peaks are for seasoned hikers. Choose a single summit (like Ben Lettery) or tackle several in a loop. Navigation skills required, but the barren, dramatic terrain is unforgettable. 

8. Omey Island Tidal Walk (Claddaghduff)

Distance: 5–7 km | Time: 1–2 hours | Difficulty: Easy
Accessible only at low tide, this walk across firm sand leads to Omey Island, a peaceful, unspoiled spot with old ruins, wildflowers, and Atlantic breezes. Check tide times!

9. Killary Harbour Famine Trail (Leenane)

Distance: 9 km (one-way) | Time: 2–3 hours | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Following an old famine relief road, this coastal path along Killary Fjord offers haunting beauty and historical significance. Spot mussel farms, sheep, and occasional seals along the way.

10. Portumna Forest Park (east Galway)

Distance: 1.5–10 km (multiple loops) | Time: 1–3 hours | Difficulty: Easy
While not in Connemara proper, this forest park near Lough Derg has lakeside trails, castle ruins, and a wide range of easy walking routes. Great for families and gentle exploring.
